Macbooks and Meat Eaters…. January 10, 2009

Could you kill this????

Could you kill this????

Well it is finally the weekend. Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster (or whatever deity that is currently in fashion). :P

I spent most of the morning being a lazy bugger, surfing the web and watching ‘Animal Planet’, and then dragged myself outside, into the -5 degree temperatures with the promise of buying a new computer :D . My husband and I really splurged today – He bought himself an eee PC and I bought my first ever Macbook. Previously to my Macbook, I had also had an eee PC, running Linux – Fedora. It is a nifty little machine and did it’s job well, but I found thats it’s processing power was inadequate (I like to watch videos on YouTube, which the eee had an issue with). The eee was also not compatible (due to the Linux – Fedora OS) with my language CD’s that I wish to run at some point in the distant future. Because of these two minor shortcomings I was left with two choices: 1 – Re-install windows on my old clunky PC (which now works mainly as a paperweight) or 2 – buy a Mac.

Due to numerous (and obvious) reasons  I long ago decided to boycott Microsoft, so my choice was easy – MacStore here I come.

So, braving the cold weather, hubby and I marched down to the Apple store and promptly bought a Macbook, (and also managed to successfully resist the store assistant’s persistent attempts to make us purchase ‘Apple Protection’ for an extra €200).

Anyway, thats enough nerdy talk….

I find it interesting that people who consume meat have this overwhelming desire to scorn or ‘convert’ vegetarians. During the week I was talking to one of my colleagues about my eating habits, because they had asked me about my diet. During my conversation, another of my colleagues rudely proclaimed ‘I eat meat.. Nothing like a good steak’. I looked at him in silence for a few seconds and then retorted ‘well, you must also know then, that you have a high risk of heart disease, colon cancer and other numerous ailments’. He went red, mumbled something under his breath and went back to his work. Stupid remarks such as these are constantly thrown at me when people find out that I choose not to eat murdered animals. Why do meat eaters get so defensive about their eating habits? Sure, I’m vegetarian, and if people ask me about my choices I am more then happy to share my reasons with them, but I never impose my habits on anybody, and therefore assume meat eaters will extend me the same courtesy.

I do not like the idea of slaughtering animals for food (unless of course it is necessary for your imminent survival), but I am not going to get on my soapbox every time the word ’steak’ is used. If I did so I would have very few friends.

What I find even more bizarre, is that while many meat eaters are happy to force their opinion on me and exclaim how good it is to eat animal carcasses, they could never actually kill a cow or chicken etc when presented with the opportunity to do so. So many people are happy to pick up the pre-sliced steaks and mince from the supermarket shelf, but are not willing to acknowledge where the stuff actually comes from. I know for a fact that many of my friends who consume meat would either faint with horror, or firmly refuse if they were asked slaughter an animal. Even if it was for food purposes.

Nothing like the hypocritical meat eater.

I think they should learn to practice what they preach….

Anyway, thats enough ranting for today… Time to keep playing with my Macbook..

Take Care, and Stay Green,
