The musings of a Vegan, Atheist, Australian who just can't seem to get off the couch…..

Hello world! January 2, 2009

Looking out over the Norwegian countryside

Well, here I am. I have finally made it into the world of blogging. I was never really into this stuff at all and am not exactly an internet or computer boffin (I seem to have this magical ability to stop computers from working by just looking at them), but as stated in my first setence: Here I am. I guess the reason why I finally decided to dip my toes into this new and exciting relm of self expression is because of my husband. He has been running his own blog for quite a while now and I guess the constant sight of him staring intenty at the computer screen with his giant headphones on (so that he looks like this strange geeky alien) has finally rubbed off on me, and I finally decided to give it a shot. so again. Here I am…

Now I suppose I should write a little about myself and my adventures so that you, dear reader, can know what on earth makes this strange woman girl tick. Well, I shall try to give you a brief glimpse of my little life, so that you can get a vague idea of how my tired brain works, but I will try to keep it short, so that I do not bore you so much that you fall asleep, or worse, cause you to rip out your hair and have a psychotic episode so bizarre that you end up in a nuthouse…. (I dont want to have the guilt of having driven someone mad hanging over me)…

So let me begin… I was born and bred in a tiny, (and crappy) country town in Queensland Australia, and when I turned 18 I packed my bags as quickly as possible and moved to a slightly bigger but still surprisingly crappy town – the ‘Capital’ city of Australia – Canberra. (If you’ve ever been to Canberra for more than 1 week you’ll know how crappy it is).

In Canberra I studied classical music,  majoring in flute performance. This was not a good choice, as there is little work for the classical flautist these days and most musicians are destined for a life of struggle and misery. Something which I am just too damn lazy to bother with. So anyway, I completed my studies, with honours, and a High Destinction average, but in reality, i finished uni with a toilet paper degree and little job prospects. Luckily though, half way through my honours year I came into some money with which I used to purchase some plane tickets to the Netherlands.

My Grandfather was Dutch, and I always wanted to see the motherland, so once i had finished university, I packed my bags as quickly as I could and jumped on that plane. When I got to the Netherlands I stayed with some family for the first 2 months but after that I got off my lazy butt and got myself a dayjob, working for a large company, who’s name I won’t mention here for security reasons (and so that I don’t get into trouble if I slag them off at any point during my blogging). The job was (and still is) pretty dull (customer support, can it get any lower?) but it was fun not having to study and I was finally enjoying myself after 4 stressful years of university.

At this company I met my husband. He is a fairly nice guy, originally from Norway, who has nice blue eyes and is a quiet and caring introvert. I don’t know whether it was just pure chemistry, or the fact that his calm and quiet attitude balanced out my lewd and embarrassing behaviour, but we fell in love, had a whirlwind romance and two months later we were happily married. (much to the shock of my poor mother).

And now, here I am. I am Liz: extremely lazy, vegetarian, Atheist, Australian expat. I live in the Netherlands with my ever patient and understanding spouse and I like to sit in front of the TV or computer enjoying snacks and chocolate. I care about world issues and the environment and tend to open my mouth before thinking. I enjoy art, comic books, good coffee and cuddles. I am quite opinionated but try to back up my statements with evidence and I am secretly in love with Richard Dawkins :P

I hope to entertain you and enthrall you in my musings and rantings and I look forward to sharing my random stories with all who care to read.

Tot Ziens (its dutch for goodbye :)
